Race Report: Slideways Juniors Head Indoors for First Time!

The second round of the Slideways Junior and Cadet Sprint Series saw two bumper fields of competitors taking to the indoor three level Slideways Go Karting Gold Coast Nerang circuit for the very first time.

With competitors looking to score points in the quest to win the Slideways-PWR Scholarship, drivers took to the track for three ten-minute-long races, which followed on from a two-lap qualifying dash to determine the grid for the opening heat.

Juniors

The Juniors (ages 12-15) once again turned out with a high quality field for their first ever indoor event.

Topping the time charts in qualifying was the discovery of the opening round – Elliot Cleary – who topped the session with a time of 46.421sec.

Second on the grid for the opener went to Ethan Bryson, then Jude Livermore, Chaad Hewitt, Carter Skewes, Luka Blagojevic, Brayden Hill, Cody Shephard, Campbell MacMillan, Bowen Kimberley, Bodhi Norman and Stefanie Wilmott.

For the opening 11-lap-race, it was Cleary from the pole who cleared out to a 6.379sec victory, recording a fastest lap of 47.072sec en route to the chequered flag.

Hewitt charged through to second from Livermore, then Bryson, Hill, Norman with a mega drive through the pack, Blagojevic in seventh, then MacMillan, Skewes, Kimberley, Shephard and Wilmott.

With the random invert in play for race two, it was Livermore who came through for the win by nearly three seconds (fastest lap – 47.159sec), ahead of Bryson, then Hewitt, Hill, Cleary, Norman, MacMillan, Blagojevic, Kimblerley, Skewes, Shephard and Wilmott.

For the final it was once again Cleary (best time of 47.156) the driver to beat, taking home the win from Livermore and Hewitt.

Bryson finished fourth from Hill, Skewes, Kimberley, Norman, MacMillan, Wilmott and Shephard.

The overall podium for the day featured Cleary, ahead of Livermore and Bryson, while the Best & Fairest points went to Cleary, Livermore and Skewes.

Cadets

With a 12-driver entry, the field was split into two for qualifying, with Raymond Mallin claiming the pole position with a best time of 50.212sec.

In the opening race for the bottom 50% qualifiers, it was Louis Brown (52.243sec fastest lap) on top from Lachlan Trevillien, Billy Parrish, Casius Kruck, Rodney Allen and Harley Rice.

For the second heat it was more of the same from Brown, who cleared out for a commanding victory with a best lap time of 52.999sec.

Trevillien was next home ahead of Parrish, Kruck, Rice and Allen.

In the final race, with the grid determined by combined points for the day, Brown and Trevillien both advanced to the top 50% final by virtue of their 1-2 finish, with Brown registering the fastest lap with a 52.999sec time.

Parrish finished third, ahead of Kruck and Allen.

In the opening race for the top 50% qualifiers it was Luke Wilson who won with the closest margin of the day – only 0.654sec from Zachary Naylor.

Brock Helm was third, ahead of Mallin (fastest race lap – 51.668sec), then Daniel Sullivan and Ellie Wilson.

With the random invert in play for the race two grid, it was Mallin (quick time – 52.117sec) on top at a canter, ahead of Ellie Wilson, Naylor, Helm, Luke Wilson and Sullivan.

Mallin once again dominated the main final, heading the field by 16sec at the chequered flag, with a best time of 51.117sec.

Naylor finished second, ahead of Helm, Luke Wilson, Ellie Wilson, Trevillien, Brown and Sullivan.

Overall for the day it was Mallin on top from Naylor and Luke Wilson, while the Best & Fairest points went to Mallin, Ellie Wilson and Brown.

Slideways PWR Scholarship Program is GO for 2019!

Recreational go kart racing can now take you right through to being on the grid at Bathurst!
